Happy New Year to all of our friends, students, and all those who read and ask questions in this Forum.

I have a request: currently we're working on the part of the "History of horse breeding in America" series in EQUUS Magazine which concerns the American Standardbred. This is not to be confused with the American Saddlebred: two different breeds. The Standardbred trotter and pacer is usually known and used as a harness horse but there are thousands of these animals up for adoption since their track careers are (nowadays) often not that long. Many retire from racing sound and as they are athletic, well-bred, good legged and generally good minded, they make fabulous "sport horses" both on the flat and over fences. Or some people drive them (since they are already broke to drive), or other people just keep them as great general-purpose riding horses.

As the finale to this series I'd love to be able to present some successful adoptions....with the general purpose of encouraging more people to adopt a retired harness racer. What I'd like is a photo of you and your Standardbred, plus three or four paragraphs to tell us how you use your horse and what your experiences have been with them.

Anybody who can help out, please EMail me off list by writing office@equinestudies.org, and I'll send directions for transmitting the photo and your descriptions. I'm hoping to get a dozen or more responses on this. Thanks very much, and again happy new year and here's to a year 2021 that's better in every way than the old year now gone by. -- Dr. Deb

Happy New Year Dr Deb! Good riddance to 2020!
Am so relieved to have a fresh start.

Thank you for maintaining this space for us to learn.

I did have a Standardbred Mare for a while and in a moment of madness rehomed her, my greatest regret. She was such a good horse, very easy to train and sound. Duh to things we do.

All the Best for 2021.
Kind Regards
Judy

Judy, if you know anybody else who has a Standardbred, or even the folks you sold your mare to, I'd love to be able to contact them. There are lots and lots of Standardbreds in New Zealand for sure. -- Dr. Deb
