I have been a lurker on this site off and on for the last couple of years and have very much enjoyed the interaction and sharing of ideas and experiences by the group members. I wanted to share an incident that occured with my horses (QH gelding and mare....9 and 10 years old respectively) the other evening.

I was riding my mare in the arena when she started to stumble at the cantor. She was having a very difficult time getting back her balance and it appeared we might fall over. I stepped off to help her get her balance and she was able to do so easily. Just at that moment my gelding (the more dominant of the two) came running across the arena and attacked the mare, biting and kick her. It took me a minute or to get him off of her.

My question is what do you think might have provoked such a reaction by my gelding? Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Dear GDub -- Thank you for making a post after lurking so long! We enjoy knowing who it is that's out there.

As to your query -- this is a wierd one, and I think partly because there's something missing in your report, somewhere. I mean, horses just about never attack without considerable provocation.

Further, I can't be sure from your description that your mare stumbling or wobbling has anything to do with the subsequent attack by the gelding.

One question that's worth asking though is, was the mare in heat at the time?

And, has this gelding ever attacked any other horse before, under any circumstances that you have observed?

We're going to have to get more facts before we can solve this one, I think. -- Dr. Deb
