Hello. I own a morgan gelding named Dicey. He has always been an itchy type of horse, but this summer he has been rubbing himself almost to the point of being raw. I would really like to help him and I was wondering if any one knew of a home remedy or product I could bathe him with that would make it better for him. Thank you.

Rora -- there are literally a couple of hundred different reasons that your horse could be itchy -- so that it would be VERY unsafe here for any of us, at blind sight, to recommend any product.

What you need initially is to call your veterinarian and obtain a specific diagnosis as to what is causing the horse to itch....it could be anything from mites or lice to hives to skin fungus to liver disease. Some of these things are pretty lightweight, others are extremely serious. No one in the world can possibly figure this out without examining the horse, and the qualified person for that is your veterinarian.

Do let us know what he or she finds out after thorough physical examination and/or laboratory testing.

Best wishes -- Dr. Deb
