Dear Dr Deb and All,

The attached photo is of my pony's Incisors, she had a tooth extracted earlier in the year and I am now looking at teeth. I have just learnt a lesson and thought it would be good to share. Bit embarrassed but never mind.

The pony started to head flick/shake quite badly. Most head flickers we have had here end up in a hole in the ground so I started to panic.

I compared her teeth to the other ponies here, and got into a bigger panic as as her outer incisors on the top and bottom looked broken to me. She has a few chips out of her teeth so I my mind started to tell me her teeth were awful.

Before I got too carried away, to get to the bottom of the head flick I started with a visit from our Vet/Dentist. By the time he left I was happy Teeth are not causing the head flicking.

He explained her teeth are normal for a pony her age, around 9 years. The cusp on the surface of the teeth wears as they age and gets flatter on top. Duh! I had been comparing her teeth to ponies approaching and in their 20s!

I have also included a photo of a 19 year old pony who had a hook on her tooth I was concerned about. The Dentist had a good look in her mouth and was happy it wasn't interfering with her bite but just ground a bit off for me.

Third photo is of a weird tooth that has appeared in another 19 year old. At the moment the pony is unconcerned about this tooth so we are just watching it, till it needs to come out.

I hope the wee story might help someone not to panic!
Best Wishes
Judy
